What works for me this Wednesday

Its another Wednesday (the last Wednesday of my life at TFAS), and another Works-for-Me Wednesday hosted by Shannon.

If you read my blog or know me, you have probably figured it out that I am a safety-110-percent-paranoid freak. From watching too much Unsolved Mysteries as a kid, I find EVERYthing scarey and am always certain that something is out there trying to get me. When we moved to Washington DC from Atlanta, my mom (I'm sure this is where I get it) was sure I would be gunned down in the streets or that our apartment would be broken into all the time. Thankfully, we have a very safe secure building and I am located way above the "ladder-mark" (Definition, the height at which a ladder could assist someone to get in). I'd still get scared at night when Ken was gone. So I came up with a bit of a security solution. The way my "front door" works is somewhat like a hotel where you can open it from the inside even if it is locked. To keep the door permanently locked, I put a chair underneath the handle which blocks the lock from disengaging.

With that problem solved, I am not looking foward to moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan to an apartment on the ground level with lots of windows and doors! During my freak out panic attack, I saw an informercial (yes, informercials are my saving grace at times...but thats whole other post for another time) that advertised "alarms" for doors and windows. Mainly, they are just glorified noise makers but at least it would either scare away people trying to steal stuff or let me know that someone was trying to get in.

So what works for me this Wednesday? Finally testing out my alarms and having some peace of mind for our move is working for me this Wednesday...and infomercials...they always work for me.

*Also, I am looking for some moving tips...we are moving ourselves this Tuesday! so I could use any helpful tips you have!

Those would be nice to have. Especially on those occasions when hubby is not around.

Unfortunately, I'm not the best to give advice on moving. I hate moving and hate packing and anything involved. If I knew I were to be moving again anytime soon, I would just start slowly packing stuff up so I didn't have to do it all at once. That's the only tip I'd give! :-)

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

I really want to buy those things.

When I moved, I packed up things that I didn't need first and long before I really needed too. That way it seemed like less work and the things you need, you have to pack. So once you bored of packing, the only stuff you have left you have to take with you and the breakables are already wrapped properly.

Thanks for coming by my blog. You can bag balm at most drug stores. I w*ould get the smaller tins unless you plan on using it a lot.

We have moved every 5 years. the first one we did totally ourselves and hated it. The second one my husbands company did (the best!!) and the last one we packed and hired the movers (also a good choice if you are footing the bill). My tips, if you have children, pack all the bedding and bathroom stuff you use nightly in a box, label it as LAST IN THE TRUCK and that will be the one they unpack first. Unpack and set up the children;s rooms first so they have stability and then go from there. Pack smart, meaning, label (kitchen, bath, etc) and number all boxes and only take what you like. If you don't use it or don't like it anymore, leave it for charity or with a friend who will use it. SInce the boxes are labeled you can shout out whick room is which. I have also heard of putting a colored square on the boxes, a different color for every room. at the new house tape the matiching color by each room. Like, yellow for kitchen (all the yellow boxes go in the kitchen) blue for master bedroom, etc. Do you have a specific question I may be able to answer? I love moving!!

Those alarms are great! Most major home improvement chains carry them now at a lower cost than the Infomercial. We got them when our little guy was 2 and liked to let himself out of the house  The alarm would ring the second he opened the door, so I could grab him BEFORE he got to the street.

My fear too is a very mobile toddler who is getting close to opening doors. I will have to look for these! Good luck with your move!

I've never tried these alarms. I hope they help keep you safe!

I've moved a ton of times, so you'd think I'd have a plethora of tips to share with you, but I don't really. Well, maybe use the move as an opportunity to PURGE, PURGE, PURGE. That's what I always do!

Great idea! This would also be a good thing with kids around. My little girl loves to open doors. Good luck to you in your move!

I hate Unsolved Mysteries!!!! It totally FREAKS me out!
My friend has one of those alarms on her back door just to make her feel better about it because it is far away from her "living" space! They are AWESOME!

Noisemakers are a great idea. I also quote Psalm 27 or 91 to myslef (and my children) when hubby's gone. Then I feel secure and protected.

Those so totally work! I remember you told me about them when I moved into my slightly-sketchy Clemson apartment. . . I found them at WalMart and sleep much much much better now! Just be sure to remember to cut them off in the morning! I scared the crap out of myself a few times!
